My Son- Fredericton Photographer

My son had his first downhill race this past weekend.  His father and I contributed with food and volunteering, Jeff timing the race at the top and I collected the racers bibs.  It was cold but it helped to make us aware of how much actually goes into these ski races.

Keagan joined the race team this year at our local ski hill and is advancing in his skiing at break neck speeds!  We all began skiing a few years ago as Jeff and I decided it would be something nice as a family we could do.  Both kids have been in the Nancy Green ski school and Keagan began with the race team this year.  Keagan is a thinker and often he approaches new experiences with caution.  He has been a bit slower to progress with skiing compared to his sister in terms of going faster and confidentally down the hill.  I consider it a good quality to have at least one child that is cautious, but once Keagan gains confidence in himself that he can do it then he is amazing at things.  He listens, approaches things like an engineer (like his dad) and wants to do it the right way.  Technically correct in skiing but perhaps not as fast as the rest.

Well he went into the Saturday race and we just told him to have fun.  It was a great experience… he came last in terms of time (although times for the 1st year skiers aren’t key) but he wasn’t disqualified and didn’t miss a gate.  He did better the next day and he had fun.  Speed will come but even his coaches have commented on his technical approach.  He has a great attitude and is having a ball and wasn’t bothered about his time.  His two good friends have been in skiing a few years longer and did really well.  For some kids it would be deflating to have friends who are faster and better…. but Keagan is a confident kid and is genuinely happy for his friends.  In terms of his free skiing, I can’t keep up to him anymore and he is showing up both Jeff and I with his skiing talent.

Way to go my son… your parents are both very proud of you and how you did this past weekend.

A few images of him coming down the hill.   I didn’t have a long lens and was trying to run up to take these and then run back to collect the racers bibs.

hard to see him in this one.

I thought this was a fun winter quote to share as well…
